FOIA Request to Rutgers University – Camden regarding Chinese National students on June 16, 2025.

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to Rutgers University – Camden by South Jersey Sun, a media organization dedicated to covering local governmental affairs. The request, made under the New Jersey Open Public Records Act, seeks specific information about Chinese National students enrolled at the university.

The FOIA request asks for documents or lists that detail all current students who are Chinese Nationals and their respective departments of study. If student names are protected, the requester has asked for the total number of such students broken down by department. Additionally, the request seeks information on scholarships received by these students, including the amount and source of each scholarship. There is a particular interest in scholarships affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council.

Furthermore, the request includes a demand for any university policies or procedures that describe how Rutgers University monitors its students, including Chinese Nationals, to safeguard intellectual property and other confidential information.

This request is made on behalf of South Jersey Sun and The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy. The coalition assists media companies and public advocacy groups in investigating governmental agencies using Freedom of Information laws. As a member of the media involved in news gathering and reporting, South Jersey Sun has requested a fee waiver for accessing these records.

We look forward to receiving this information in an electronic format as it will greatly aid in our reporting efforts. As always, we remain open for any questions or clarifications regarding this request.
